What is Net Metering?

Net metering is available for members who have systems that are 25 kW or less. Net metering is the accounting process that MPE uses to bill for member solar. This process requires replacing the current meter with a new meter (called a net meter) that is programmed to capture energy flowing from the MPE distribution system to the member’s home and excess energy generated by the member’s solar that is flowing onto the MPE distribution system. The net meter can only measure the electricity that flows across it, either into your home or back to the grid.  MPE does not know how much power your solar system produced, only how much flowed back to the MPE grid.

Your bill will change once the net meter is installed. There will be three new lines on your bill. 

Understanding Your Bank

During the summer months, your solar generation could produce more than you consume. In this scenario, MPE allows you to “Bank” the energy for use during another month.

During winter months, your solar generation could produce less energy than you consume. In this scenario, MPE will take energy from the “Bank”, if you have any, and reduce your KWH to either 0 or the amount of energy you have in your “Bank”.

If you have energy in your “Bank” at the end of March, MPE will pay you the average wholesale power supply cost rate for each kWh in your “Bank.” The wholesale avoided cost of power for 2024 (2025 payout) was $0.04213/kWh.
